Airdrie RCMP say claim of attempted child abduction in Crossfield is 'unfounded'

Airdrie Rural RCMP are clearing the air after a possible child abduction attempt was misreported in Crossfield last week.

Airdrie Rural RCMP are clearing the air after a possible child abduction attempt was recently reported in Crossfield.

According to an Aug. 4 press release from the detachment, the incident in question occurred the afternoon of July 30, when witnesses reported a silver car pulled up to a group of children outside of a residence in Crossfield. The release stated the vehicle's occupants appeared to wave the children over, but the kids refused.

“The children ran inside to get their parents, and when the parents came outside, the vehicle was gone,” the release stated.

A short video of the incident was posted to a local community Facebook page in Crossfield, and the post indicated RCMP had been contacted. The post encouraged Crossfieldians to keep an eye out for the silver car.

However, Airdrie RCMP's release stated the driver of the silver car also reached out to the detachment upon seeing the social media post, claiming they were trying to find a particular home address.

“The investigation determined that the driver was looking for an address in the area, and no criminal offence occurred or was attempted,” RCMP stated.

“Airdrie RCMP request social media posts regarding this incident be removed, as the investigation determined the allegations were unfounded.”

Despite the misunderstanding, Airdrie RCMP is still encouraging the public to report any criminal or suspicious activity they encounter.

“Reports tell us where to look, who to look for, and where to patrol in the future,” the release stated. “If you see a crime in progress, dial 911.”

Those who wish to remain anonymous when reporting a crime are asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), online at www.P3Tips.com or by using the “P3 Tips” app available through the Apple App or Google Play Store.
