Chestermere announces new measures to contain virus

The City of Chestermere is ramping up measures to stop the spread of COVID-19, as the virus continues to evolve in Alberta.

Effective March 27, the City has closed its major park features, including the Chestermere Family Bike Park, the skatepark and the beaches at Anniversary Park, Cove Park, Sunset Beach and Dog Park Rock Beach.

The pavilion in John Peake Park is also closed, according to the City's press release, as well as all playgrounds, basketball courts and tennis courts.

“We recognize that people want to get outside and enjoy the fresh air but we also need to limit high-traffic places where people may touch objects or be tempted to linger without social distancing,” said Mayor Marshall Chalmers in a statement. “Therefore, these features are closed until further notice.”

The City has also issued a closure for Lakeside Golf Club, according to the release.

A second announcement from the City March 27 confirmed the municipality had adopted the new province-wide regulation that dine-in restaurant service is now prohibited, while stricter measures are in place for restaurants that provide take-out and delivery options.

As of March 27, gatherings in Alberta are now limited to 15 people, as per the provincial government's new guidelines.

"Gathering in groups remains a risk, and we strongly recommend against any gathering," Chalmers said in a video posted on the City of Chestermere's YouTube channel. "Here in Chestermere, we strongly recommend you do not gather at all outside your immediate household, given the risk of community transmission of the COVID-19 virus."

The Chestermere jurisdiction, which includes Conrich and Indus, has recorded four confirmed cases of COVID-19, as of March 27.
