The push to create an emergency women's shelter in Cochrane will get a boost Sept. 27, with a Wild West fundraising event at the Texas Gate Bar & Grill.

"We're looking to raise over $20,000 from the event," said Debbie Leah, event organizer.

"We chose Big Hill Haven [Emergency Women's Shelter] because Cochrane is in need of a safe place for women and children who are fleeing domestic violence. Big Hill Haven has a resource worker who works out of the Family and Community Support Services, and she currently sends people into Calgary and elsewhere to find shelter. As a board member of Big Hill Haven, I can share that the board is actively seeking a shelter here in Cochrane, and we need funds to get bricks and mortar."

Tickets to the fundraiser, called A Night at the Wild West, cost $40 per person, and include dinner and a performance from the band Bad Apples. The event will also have dancing, a silent and live auction and a charity jail cell.

Leah said the theme of A Night at the Wild West was fairly obvious, as organizers wanted to make the inaugural fundraiser a memorable one.

"We, as organizers, thought it was a very fitting theme with the Western spirit that we have in Cochrane, and what a better location then the historic Rockyview Hotel and the Texas Gate Saloon," she said.

"People do not need to dress in the old wild style, but they are asked to wear their best Western duds."
