Star Wars Reads Day has become one of those annual events that hardly needs promoting – fans, young and old, have simply never lost their love for the galaxy far, far away.

All October, devotees across the world – many of them in costume – will gather in libraries, bookstores and community centres to share their passion for the iconic universe sprung from the mind of George Lucas.

Here at Airdrie Public Library (APL), we specialize in getting into the spirit of all things Star Wars, especially the joy of reading.

On Oct. 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., your library will be as noisy and bustling as the Mos Eisley Cantina on Tatooine.

So, if you were hoping for a quiet study space for those four hours, please accept our apologies.

The event will feature cosplay, crafts, activities, Storytime with Princess Leia, lightsaber tag, and much more.

APL will also be hosting several members of the 501st Legion of Vader’s Fist, the Calgary Badlands Garrison of Stormtroopers who have generously donated their time to make our event wonderfully authentic for wide-eyed kids, um, and adults.

Ultimately, of course, Star Wars Reads Day is about a community of people who love reading the stories and watching the movies.

And we have plenty of both.

APL has Star Wars universe books and comics for every age and reading level, as well as all the movies and animated series (Clone Wars, LEGO) – on DVD and Blu-ray – and everything in between from the Star Wars cookbook (Wookie pies, clone scones and other galactic goodies) to dictionaries and even universe-spanning encyclopedias – all available with your free library card.

Also happening Oct. 5 is a unique fundraiser for APL, a Floral Thanksgiving Centrepiece Creation.

The cost is $50 and includes everything you need to make a truly extravagant centrepiece with step by step instructions from a skilled local floral artist.
