In Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are? by Dr. Seuss, a wise old man in the Desert of Drize gives some words of advice that are fitting for this year’s Thanksgiving.

“When you think things are bad, when you feel sour and blue, when you start to get mad...you should do what I do!” he says. “Just tell yourself, Duckie, you’re really quite lucky!”

As Thanksgiving approaches, we here at Airdrie Public Library (APL) would like to take a moment to recognize how lucky we’ve been and how thankful we are to all the businesses, individuals and families who have continued to support their public library.

Many of you have donned masks and stopped by to browse the collection, to study, pick one of our Grab and Go bags or to use a computer.

In this, we are both lucky, as there are Alberta libraries that are either still closed or only partially opened. Here in Airdrie, through the continuing support of the City and the Library Board, we are open seven days a week.

Things are different and almost all of our programming is online through Zoom and pre-recorded videos, but your library is still a safe community hub where you can sit by the fireplace to read, access free Wi-Fi and computers and browse the latest of the hundreds of new titles we are adding to our collection every week.

Thanksgiving is a day to reflect on what has brought us to this time and place in our lives, and this year should be no different.

Our gatherings may be smaller, may include masks and physical distancing and may require greater effort to find those nuggets of thankfulness, but as Dr. Seuss’s wise old man says, “Some people are much more...oh, ever so much more...oh, muchly, much-much more unlucky than you!”

The library will be closed Monday, Oct 12 for Thanksgiving Day.
