About this time last year, (remember the days before the pandemic?) Airdrie Public Library (APL) was busy hosting our annual Family Literacy Day.

Games were played, pages were coloured, songs were sung, and fun was had by everyone.

As Dr. Seuss says in his book, Oh, the Places You’ll Go!, “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.”

Well, as nice as that thought is, Family Literacy Day is going to be a little different this year. Still, as the whimsical Dr. Seuss goes on to say, “There is fun to be done!”

This year’s Family Literacy Day will be in three parts, all online or through Zoom, and all you must do is register for two.

First, on Jan. 27, from 1 to2 p.m., we have a special "Sing, Read, Rhyme" event, which comes with its own activity kit that can be picked up through our  curbside service after you register.

Also, on Jan. 27, we will be releasing videos on our website filled with activities designed for families with children of all ages. No registration is required for these, as all you must do is visit our website to enjoy the videos.

Then, on Jan. 30, to celebrate literacy and families, join us for a special ARTSaturday with local artist Jaye Benoit. Using pastels, crayons, watercolours and paper, participants will create a unique piece of art all their own.

Registration for this event is divided into two age groups and times; families with kids aged six to 14, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and families with kids aged 15 and up from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

Please note that individuals are more than welcome to attend these sessions – not just families.

So, as the playful Dr. Seuss concludes, “So be sure when you step. Step with care and great tact and remember that Life's a Great Balancing Act.”

Indeed, it is.
