Irricana sets gopher control date for July 5

The Town of Irricana will be undergoing gopher control on July 5 in select parts of the community.

The Town of Irricana has scheduled July 5 for gopher control, with more dates expected to be added in the future.

Four key areas will be treated within the town, including the Irricana Cemetery, Irricana’s off-leash dog park, the south ball diamond, and the main entrance into the town.

The Town’s press release said staff will be using a non-hazardous mustard seed that is not toxic or pesticide-based. Emphasizing the treatment has no risk to residents or pets, the municipality has nevertheless asked residents to stay clear of the areas as the holes get filled.

According to the press release, the non-toxic substance RoCon is a poison-free rodenticide that is registered with Health Canada. It has been used in helping control Richardson Ground squirrels and Norway rats.

The Town said this particular substance is ideal for what they are trying to achieve by targeting Richardson Ground squirrels while remaining toxic-free for people, pets, and other non-targeted wildlife.
