EDITORIAL: What will 2023 bring?

Even in a decade like the 2020s, there's always reason to start a new year off fresh with a renewed sense of optimism.

We've officially entered a new year.

Similar to 2020 and 2021, the year that just ended brought many challenges. While COVID-19 appeared to (mostly) be in the rear-view mirror in 2022, another society-wide challenge emerged in the form of sky-high inflation and a cost-of-living crisis that will certainly persist into 2023, and perhaps beyond.

It's already been an incredibly tough start to the decade for most people, and it feels like the 2020s will continue to present difficulties nation-wide in the year to come. History books summarizing this decade in the distant future (or perhaps history will be documented on digital tablets only by then) will likely have to allocate a lot of space to describe the current decade.

Last week, we published our annual year-in-review issue, which as usual included our top-10 picks for the biggest stories of the year from our news, community, and sports sections. While always a time-consuming project to compile these listicles in the lead-up to the last issue of the calendar year, these annual compilations allow our newsroom to reflect on a busy year of coverage as we look back at our biggest headlines and stories of the previous 12 months. We hope you enjoyed reading it.

Even in a decade like the 2020s, there's always reason to start a new year off fresh with a renewed sense of optimism. Whether or not you're starting a New Year's resolution this January, we hope you have the same sense of positivity in these early days of 2023.

From all of us at the Airdrie City View and Rocky View Weekly's editorial team, we wish our readers a happy new year!
