I am the most recent addition to the news team here at Rocky View Publishing.
My first week has certainly been a bit of a blur as I’ve been trying to familiarize myself with the city, the county and the many communities we cover.
While I’m a newcomer to Rocky View Publishing, I have been part of the overall chain, Great West Newspapers for the past three years. I started out at the Carstairs Courier before moving to the Didsbury Review and again to the Innisfail Province.
So, while I’m used to jumping into new communities and making myself at home, I certainly have my work cut out for myself here with such a large coverage area.
I certainly enjoyed my time in cCentral Alberta. I got the chance to really get my feet wet and cover all different topics from council to lifestyle and entertainment to crime to sports.
I moved this way in August after getting married because my husband landed a job in Calgary. And then I heard there was an opening with Rocky View Publishing and everything clicked into place.
Since my job will be to get to know many of you, readers, I will tell you a few things first about myself.
What exactly do you need to know about me? Probably nothing. But I will try to fill you in on a few things you might want to know about me:
I’ve been in Alberta for just over three years now. I started livinglived in Calgary before moving to Didsbury and then Innisfail. I grew up in in B.C.’s the Lower Mainland of B.C. and moved to Nova .Scotia. a couple of years after high school to study and met and fell in love with my husband.
The first time I visited Airdrie I was contemplating living here and commuting to my job in Carstairs. I decided I wanted to be closer to work and chose Didsbury instead but continued to visit Airdrie for groceries and Japanese food and I would also drive to Balzac for movies.
I am becoming a little obsessed with cats - . Or aat least mine. She’s new. I found her in Vernon, B.C when visiting family for Thanksgiving. We then found out last week that she’s not a stray as originally thought and came from a loving family with two children. Since the two girls assumed she had been eaten by coyotes that stalk their neighbourhood, they had a memorial for the calico. And, since they’ve been distracted recently with their new puppy, the parents decided we can keep Nola. Phew.
I also really like pandas, the giant kind. And while I can’t wait for them to come back to Calgary, they are taking a back seat to my new found interest in cats.
Besides moving around a lot and becoming a crazy cat woman, I am in love with Bikram Yoga, or the cult, as my friends like to call it. It’s an hour and a half, there’s 26 postures and two breathing exercises and it’s in a 40 degree temperature room. It’s extremely addicting and relaxing and don’t be surprised if I attempt to talk you in to trying it out.
As a reporter with Rocky View Publishing, I will be mainly covering Rocky View County council meetings and county events and taking on other stories and features where I can. I look forward to getting to know new people and learning your stories. Sometimes it’s the smallest tips that turn into the best stories.
