In recent weeks, you may have seen an advertisement regarding one of our government’s key initiatives in the battle against cyberbullying, Stop Hating Online.

Cyberbullying is a serious concern in schools and communities across Canada. In the past, I have personally received emails from victims and families concerned that society may be turning a blind eye to vicious attacks, resulting in tragic consequences.

Clearly, bullying is a complex issue and there is no single solution.

To address this issue we require the continued efforts of parents, teachers, school administrators, community service groups, governments, and society as a whole.

We all have a role to play.

On Sept. 8, our federal government launched a series of Stop Hating Online advertisements, designed to raise awareness of the consequences of cyberbullying. In addition, we created #WordsHurt, an interactive YouTube experience that demonstrates the profound impact that words can have.

Since the Stop Hating Online initiative was launched in January 2014, this national campaign has opened many eyes to the dangers of online exploitation.

Too often, cyberbullying goes far beyond schoolyard bullying and, in some cases, crosses the line into criminal activity.

Raising awareness about this issue is vital, but I believe more can be done.

About a year ago our government introduced Bill C-13, the Protecting Canadians from Online Crime Act.

Under Bill C-13, our government will prohibit the non-consensual distribution of intimate images, and empower courts to remove such images from the Internet.

In addition, it will allow courts to seize computers, cell phones, or other devices used to commit these malicious acts, and provide for reimbursement to victims.

Our government is committed to ensuring that our children are safe from online predators, and from online exploitation.

Through Bill C-13 and the Stop Hating Online initiative, our government is making it clear that such online exploitation will not be tolerated. Period.
