Rediscover Canadian hi You will be inspired

If you’re looking for inspiration, you can find it in Canadian history.

If you’re looking for inspiration, you can find it in Canadian history.

From the explorers who boldly stepped into a new world, to the first Canadian to command the International Space Station earlier this year, our nation has consistently sought new horizons.

That’s why our government plans to create the Canadian Museum of History.

Parliament recently approved legislation to do just that; changing the name and mandate of the Canadian Museum of Civilization to reflect the new goals of enhancing public knowledge, understanding and appreciation of Canada’s history and identity.

The Canadian Museum of History will highlight national achievements, including the “Last Spike” from the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway, Maurice Richard’s hockey jersey, and items from Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope.

In 2016, we will open more than 43,000 square feet of permanent exhibition space. Perhaps more importantly, the museum will be charged with sharing its artifacts with museums across Canada. Rather than allow our collections to grow dusty, sitting on shelves in storage, we intend to ensure our history is displayed proudly from coast to coast.

This is important, as a number of recent public surveys have reinforced.

For instance, we have learned that fewer than 50 per cent of Canadians are able to pass a citizenship exam that tests general knowledge about our country.

Only 26 per cent of youth, ages 18 to 24, know the year of Confederation.

Only 37 per cent know that the Battle of Vimy Ridge was fought during the First World War.

Canadians deserve to know and be proud that we come from a long line of voyageurs, mounties, pioneers, soldiers and inventors; men and women who stood up for themselves and their neighbours and changed the world.

Canadians deserve to be inspired and that inspiration can be found in our national story.

As we approach Canada’s 150th birthday, our government will ensure our story is shared.
