Never forget, heroism overcame terrorism

Celebrating Remembrance Day is always a sacred occasion, but for many of us, this year holds special significance. Last month, two of our countrymen were killed in cold blood on Canadian soil for the sole reason that they were Canadian soldiers.

Celebrating Remembrance Day is always a sacred occasion, but for many of us, this year holds special significance.

Last month, two of our countrymen were killed in cold blood on Canadian soil for the sole reason that they were Canadian soldiers.

Corporal Nathan Cirillo was shot from behind as he guarded the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Ottawa. Just days earlier, Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent was run down by a vehicle and killed in Quebec.

These murders were deliberate acts of terrorism meant to foster fear and suspicion among our people. But the terrorists failed miserably in achieving their objectives.

Their cowardice has instead brought our country closer together. It has resulted in bravery and increased love for our fellow man.

We must never forget the heroism of Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin Vickers who risked his life to save others. We need to remember the inspirational example of the citizens of Cold Lake, Alta., who came together to repair a vandalized mosque and demonstrated that we are not at war with a religion, but with extremist ideologies that foster hate and violence.

Corporal Nathan Cirillo and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent did not die in vain. Their sacrifice has brought us together and made us stronger; just as thousands of our Canadian veterans and fallen soldiers have done throughout our history.

Let us honor, love and celebrate these wonderful men and women and all they have done, are doing and will yet do for you and I.

We will remember them.
