Letter to the Editor: Mulroney one of a kind

Like a lot of people, I was angry with former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney for the GST. It was years later however, that I read 'Canadian History for Dummies' and learned why the dreaded tax was a necessity.

Like a lot of people, I was angry with former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney for the GST. It was years later however, that I read 'Canadian History for Dummies' and learned why the dreaded tax was a necessity. Once the Free Trade Agreement was signed, the government lost out on a significant portion of its revenue as tariffs were no longer being imposed. To hear of the Prime Minister's death (last month) and hear about how much work he did behind the scenes for years after his time in office, was something very good to learn.

As was said in the coverage, he was a confidant to both Stephen Harper and Justin Trudeau. Though both are from opposite sides of the political spectrum, Brian Mulroney helped them. And he was very helpful in advising our current government on how to deal with Donald Trump and the renegotiation of the Free Trade deal. This put me in mind of the thought that no matter how any of us might feel about an issue like abortion, gay rights or the environment, we need to treat the other side with respect and kindness.

Jesus said we were to love our enemies because He knew that in this sinful world, everyone will have someone they disagree with on something.

Leslie Miller,

Airdrie, AB.
