Re: "Rocky View Schools opts for voluntary masking in schools this fall," article, Airdrie Today, Aug. 26

Dear editor,

Our city’s commitment to becoming the healthiest city in Canada is at odds with the neglectful approach to children’s health Rocky View Schools is implementing this fall.

Masking, contact tracing, and self-isolation successfully prevent transmission of COVID-19 when vaccines are not available. As vaccines are not available for children under 12 years old, it is irresponsible to abandon these proven measures. With a full year of practice, it should have been straightforward to implement them again this year.

To protect vulnerable older adults, our children sacrificed seeing their friends, participating in activities, and traveling to visit family last year – all while masking, isolating, and testing for COVID-19 when necessary. Now that adults can be vaccinated, sacrificing a little convenience is too much to ask in order to protect children from potential long term disability or even death.

RVS' plan is cowardly and selfish. The board should be ashamed of themselves.
