LETTER: Lamenting the loss of trees in Big Springs

Dear editor,

The Big Springs Cable Replacement Pilot Project started last week with the removal of any trees that have been marked with a big orange X. A biologist has done a review of the trees looking for nesting birds and apparently there aren't any active nests. So, to make sure no active nesting happens before the ‘construction’ starts on July 10, trees were being cut down by an arborist starting on June 21. (I call the project ‘destruction’.)

It just seems interesting that in the June 15 issue of the Airdrie City View that I read the headline, “City secures $50,000 grant to plant 10,000 trees.” In the article it states, “The trees will provide multiple benefits, including carbon sequestration and habitat creation for local wildlife”. So, I guess that trees on Big Springs Hill and Big Springs Green, some of which are 40 years old, have outlived their usefulness in this regard.

I understand the need to replace/update the power lines. I just am so sad for the homeowners that will be affected by the loss of trees that have provided shade, privacy, habitat for birds, and ultimately beauty to their homes. One such home will lose six 40-foot trees. I only lose a wooden flowerbed and a double wide driveway.

Thank you Fortis for greater reliability and improved electricity delivery service to our area.
