EDITORIAL: 'Tis the season

The month of December can be an incredibly stressful time, as people scramble to buy gifts for loved ones, fulfill social holiday obligations and try to make Christmas a memorable and magical occasion for themselves and their families.

The holiday season is officially upon us, as evidenced by the number of Christmas and holiday-themed articles and photos in this week's issue of the Rocky View Weekly.

The month of December can be an incredibly stressful time, as people scramble to buy gifts for loved ones, fulfill social holiday obligations and try to make Christmas a memorable and magical occasion for themselves and their families. It's enough unnecessary pressure to make a lot of people prefer to shut off and wait until January before they visit a mall or otherwise take part in civil society.

Nonetheless, the holidays do bring some enjoyable aspects, one of which is the opportunity to partake in the many local community events that pop up at this time of year. As evidenced by our photo galleries in this week's issue, some of those events have already come and gone in Rocky View County, such as the always-fun 'Spirit of Christmas' festival in Bragg Creek, or Beiseker's 'Christmas in the Village', both of which were on Dec. 3.

But there's still a few weeks until Christmas, and our newsroom would encourage our readers to check out one or more of the holiday-themed community activities on the horizon to get into the holiday spirit.

There are some more winter productions on the way, such as Indus School's upcoming Christmas concert and Bragg Creek-based Swamp Donkey Musical Theatre Society's Hallmark-inspired production, Christmas in the Creek.

For Rocky View County residents seeking to make a difference to the lives of those less fortunate this holiday season, there's also the annual Magic of Christmas toy drive, which Rocky View County Fire Services members are once again taking part in.

When you're doing your Christmas gift shopping this month, our newsroom would remind Rocky View County residents to please consider shopping locally this holiday season. Record inflation means it's been another tough year economically for virtually everyone, but the truth is a large corporation does not need your dollars as much as small businesses do.
