EDITORIAL: Embrace community

The trick to loving the place you call home is to be involved and embrace everything your community offers. So this summer, try to embrace Airdrie in a way you perhaps haven't before.

July and August are typically the slowest months in terms of finding local stories to cover in Airdrie. City council is enjoying its annual recess, there's no school in session, families are on vacation, and it can occasionally be a bit tougher to find enough hyper-local news to fill our pages.

Thankfully however, this time of year always brings an abundance of community-focused events and local sports happening around Airdrie. There's something to do in town or in the region pretty much every weekend, as evidenced by last weekend's Pawz in the Park, Nose Creek Valley Museum's car boot sale, or Airdrie Irish home game.

For sports lovers, the Airdrie Mohawks senior C men's lacrosse team is playing for the provincial title this weekend, while Airdrie football fans will have one more chance to catch the Irish in action on Aug. 12, after their win last Saturday over the Edmonton Elite.

With nice weather (although a few days this summer have admittedly been too hot) we'd encourage readers to check out the many local events Airdrie has to offer. Attending local celebrations is a great way to feel like you are a part of your community, and to develop pride for the place you call home. It's also a great way to meet your neighbours and socialize with other Airdronians.

The trick to loving the place you call home is to be involved and embrace everything your community offers. So this summer, try to embrace Airdrie in a way you perhaps haven't before. Attend an event, go fishing in Nose Creek, eat at a family-run restaurant you have yet to patronize, shop at a boutique business you've never gone inside, or join a club, team, or group that provides social activities, even if they may put you outside of your comfort zone.

Airdrie offers a lot – that is why it's one of Alberta's fastest-growing municipalities. So for the rest of summer, let's get out there and embrace it!
