COLUMN: Celebrating Halloween with heart

It feels like only yesterday we were overeating pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving, but time is flying and Halloween is just around the corner.

I spoke with several residents in Airdrie this week who organize annual local Halloween events and I learned that Airdrie definitely knows how to celebrate this holiday.

It was great to hear about how these individuals came up with creative ways to amp up the community feels by using their own time and passions.

Aside from getting the community to spend time together, they’re also raising funds for a great cause, the Airdrie Food Bank.

When I was a kid, Halloween mostly consisted of dressing up at school and trick or treating in our small town. It was about candy, candy, and more candy.

But now in Airdrie, Halloween seems to be much more.

There’s Boo at the Creek, train rides at Iron Horse Park, and several family-friendly haunted houses throughout the city.

In a way, these events make Halloween seem less about consumerism and more about getting together with neighbours and enjoying the community.

Who knew the spooky season could give us such warm fuzzy feelings?

While my kids are still a little young to really enjoy any of the fun events, I can’t wait to bring them in future years.

Last year, I dressed my twins up as chickens, and this year I was very excited to give them walkers and dress them up as old men. Their costumes have since changed to Carl and Russel from the movie Up

If dogs could speak, mine would be quite happy that I now have children to dress up instead of him. A couple years back, he was doomed to the dog cone, but I used it to my advantage to dress him up as the lamp from the Pixar intro and later he became a martini glass, including an olive.

It’s not that I’m the biggest Halloween fanatic, but I do love a good costume opportunity.

If you’ve taken a stroll through Costco or Canadian Tire, you would think we were well past Halloween already as the Christmas decorations are overflowing.

Sometimes it seems we’re so obsessed with the next season that once it arrives, we’re already bored and want to move on to the next season. So I’m excited that Airdrie is really embracing Halloween before the craziness of December starts to creep in.

Let’s appreciate the individuals in Airdrie who worked hard to come up with fantastic ways to celebrate October and make the most of the current season.
