Canada stands for freedom and security

A series of conflicts and crises during this past summer have cast a long shadow around our world. Russia has illegally annexed and invaded regions of Ukraine. Meanwhile, the Islamic terrorist organization ISIS has committed heinous atrocities and seized swaths of territory in Syria and Iraq.

In both of these cases, Canada is providing significant humanitarian support, and where necessary security assistance.

There is no ambiguity as to where Canada stands. We stand with the people of Ukraine, who must be free to choose their own destiny. We stand with our allies against ISIS’ vicious and coordinated slaughter.

At times like this, when danger and uncertainty threaten to ensnare us in a trap of inaction, I find it useful to consider the lessons of Canadian history. When I think of the Fathers of Confederation, gathering together nearly 150 years ago, I can’t help but feel a sense of awe and duty. These men imagined a great Northern nation that would forever stand as a beacon of freedom and security.

Just to imagine such a force for good in the world, these leaders must have been considered the optimistic dreamers of their day. Yet with steadfast determination, they set forth on a mission to achieve these noble ambitions, a mission that continues to this very day.

Living up to these worthy ideals has not always been easy.

Along the way Canadian soldiers have bravely faced hardship and danger to win the peace and freedom we embrace today.

At times, some governments have failed to act on our principles.

They couched our words and intentions in the name of political expediency.

However, in difficult circumstances Canadians have always chosen to reject equivocation, giving voice to the enduring values that give our nation purpose.

As Prime Minister Stephen Harper has reminded us:

“The measure of good government - the true test of leadership - lies not in achieving success in times of stability and peace, but in doing so during times of risk and danger.”

Today, as ever, Canada stands for freedom and security.

Today, as ever, we stand against those who threaten us, those who attack our allies and those who endanger the cause for which we stand.

With our feet planted firmly and our minds set, those who seek to soften our fortitude through fear cannot succeed.

We are resolved that Canada shall not be moved.
