Christine Sinclair scores hat trick in Portland's 4-4 tie with Chicago

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. — Canada captain Christine Sinclair's hat trick helped Portland Thorns FC to a 4-4 draw with the Chicago Red Stars in NWSL play Saturday.

The 35-year-old from Burnaby, B.C., opened the scoring in the 16th minute, chipping the goalkeeper after Lindsey Horan looped the ball over the defence.

Her second, in the 51st minute, gave the Thorns a 3-2 lead as Meghan Klingenberg found her behind the defence. Sinclair, from close range, knocked in the perfect pass.

The Thorns skipper completed her hat trick in the 87th minute, slotting home a penalty to put Portland (1-0-1) ahead 4-3.

Japan international Yuki Nagasato tied it up for Chicago (0-0-2) in the 90th minute, with her second of the game, in front of 12,967 fans at SeatGeek Stadium. The Red Stars came close to winning it in stoppage time, hitting the post in the 94th minute.

It marked Sinclair's second NWSL hat trick. She scored the first in July 2014 in a 6-3 Portland win over the Boston Breakers.

Sinclair now has 43 career NWSL goals, tied for second most since the league started in 2013. She has scored 13 goals in 17 career matches against the Red Stars.

She has three multi-goal games against Chicago in her career and has scored five goals in her last three road matches against the Red Stars.

Sinclair has 180 international goals, four back of Abby Wambach's world record.
