A group of Rocky View Firefighters are once more hoping to raise awareness and save lives, but not this time at an accident scene or at the site of a raging structure fire.

Rather, in a much more personal way, but taking part in Movember to raise funds and to spread a message about the importance of men’s health.

“It’s a good conversation starter,” said the Rocky View Firefighters Movember team captain Maxime Royer, who is already well known among his peers for his bushy moustache. “It’s a good charity. They cover prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health. We feel these are all (male health concerns) that are related to what could happen to many of our personnel in our fire services. That’s the biggest reason why we are doing it.”

This is the 6th year Rocky View firefighters have taken part in Movember, and it has led to a little bit of competition between Rocky View County’s (RVC) four fire halls, confirmed Royer, to see which crew can raise the most money.  At the end of the day, the competition aspect just lends a bit of fun, said Royer.

“Whoever raises the most money on the team gets gift cards as an individual and as a station,” he explained.

The great thing about this year’s fundraiser, said Royer, is once again the local fire union will be matching the total amount of dollars raised between all four RVC fire halls.

“There’s no too small amount,” he said; “and keep in mind that our (IAFF Local 4794) union will be matching donations as well. So every dollar that you give will be doubled at the end of the month here.”

Royer added that raising awareness of men’s health is not just important in November, but all year round.

“Movember is doing a great job of that,” he said. “We are having people more aware during Movember, but it is something which is all year, anytime, anywhere.”
