Heavy rains may have dampened the grounds and the overall attendance at Pete Knight Days in Crossfield, June 18, but the two-day event still awarded its top rodeo honours.

Shane Goebel won the bull riding, Skyler Bearchief took top spot in the bareback and Branden Dillman claimed the saddle bronc, amidst a mud-filled rodeo arena and in front of only the most dedicated fans.

“We took a big hit on spectators,” said rodeo president Ken Dixon. “There wasn’t too many people in the stands when it was done. Everybody was pretty soggy and pretty wet.”

About 25 rodeo fans stuck around for the full event and all received a free lunch afterwards for their dedication.

“Everything went on,” Dixon said. “The only thing that was postponed was Sunday’s car show. Most people sat in their cars for the demolition derby, however. They didn’t smash the cars up as much because they couldn’t move very fast through the mud.”

Despite the less than ideal conditions, Dixon said spirits still remained high and the organizing committee is already thinking about next year.

“The dance was well attended and people stayed right until the end, so the partying didn’t stop for the rain,” he said. “We survived it. If that’s the worst they can throw at us, then next year has got to be better. We’re looking forward to it already.”
