The Hershey’s Track and Field regional open has officially announced plans to return to Airdrie.

The second annual meet will take place at Genesis Place’s outdoor track on May 10 and is open to anyone born between 1998 and 2005.

Events will include the 50-metre dash, the 100-metre dash, the 200-metre dash, the 400-metre dash, the 800-metre run, the 1,600-metre run, the 4 x 100-metre relay, the standing long jump and the softball throw.

No experience is required to enter and the top four in each discipline will advance to the provincial meet on June 16 in Edmonton.

“My job as local coordinator of this event is easy when the community steps up to back you,” said Jodie Matsuba-Szucs with the Airdrie Aces Athletics Club.

“It is our pleasure to support young athletes of Airdrie,” said Elaine McKee-Doel of McKee Homes, the event’s primary local sponsor. “It takes a lot of dedication to step up and compete in these events and we applaud all the competitors. Airdrie is a great place to live and enjoy life, and we are happy to be a part of the second annual Airdrie Hershey’s Track and Field meet.”

Participants will be entered into a regional pool and become eligible for selection to a regional team, which will travel to Hershey, Pa., to compete in the North American final on Aug. 4.

The Hershey’s Track & Field event has involved millions of kids from all across the United States and Canada.

It is solely sponsored by The Hershey’s Company and partnered with the National Recreation and Park Association, Athletics Canada and National Association for Sport and Physical Education.

Online entry for the local event will open on Feb. 20 at www.airdrieacesathletics.com

“Online registration is encouraged to assist us in preparation, however, paper entry can be e-mailed in also if online is not an option to you,” said Matsuba-Szucs. “Race day registration is discouraged and the event may be capped, so please register ahead of time.”
