It may have taken seven games, but the Airdrie Storm finally has its first win of the 2011 season.
Running back Jordan Baldwin had six rushing touchdowns to lead his squad to a 50-20 victory over the Calgary Falcons in Calgary Bantam Football Association (CBFA) league action at Shouldice Park on Oct. 7.
Storm head coach Steve Kemp said, although he believes his team to be better than its record indicates, was still relieved to get into the win column after six consecutive losses to open the season.
“It was good to get a win, finally,” he said. “It was just one of those days that everything we called was working. We played really well. The boys started playing as a team and started to believe they could do it. Hopefully we can keep that up next week and into the playoffs.”
Baldwin and the offence may have put up the Storm points, but it was in direct relation to the defence’s outstanding performance, Kemp said.
“The defence kept getting the ball back for us and that gave us the chance to run more plays. We changed some things around. We loaded up the front seven and challenged them to play better – and they did.”
The Storm, 1W-6L, will play the 6W-1L Calgary Cowboys on Oct. 15 in the regular season finale for both teams. Kickoff is at 11 a.m. at Shouldice Park’s Encana Field.
“We’ll keep working hard and try to keep the momentum going,” Kemp said.
“They’re another tough team, but I think we can play with them. It will be a good test for us to see where we’re really at heading into the playoffs.”
The three-week CBFA playoffs begin on Oct. 22, with a crossover formula between the league’s north and south divisions.
