The Springbank Links Golf Club opened on a less than ideal weekend after an April 12 snowfall, but now that temperatures are warming up and summer is approaching, the course is ready to debut some improvements.

The course features a full-length driving range, which will be ready to use at the beginning of July, according to Kevin Heise, general manager of the Springbank Links Golf Club. Improvements have also been made to holes six, seven and nine.

“It’s about making the course more playable and less intimidating,” said Heise. “The biggest thing was building the driving range. It was the missing piece to the golf puzzle and we really needed it to further our golf course. We’re super happy that it’s coming into play this year.”

The project began last year and the course had help designing the changes from someone who knows his way around a golf course: Calgary’s Stephen Ames, a professional golfer who plays on the PGA Tour. Heise said that Ames’ knowledge was a great asset during the design process.

“He’s studied every good golf course in the world because he’s had to play them,” he said.

“What’s cool about his whole vision is that he doesn’t look at it from a professional, travelling-golfer’s perspective. He looks at it from the perspective of an (amateur) golfer and what makes an enjoyable round of golf. It’s neat to see how he’s taken his pro position out of his design work.”
