Sports Shorts: White, Jensen bring home bronze

The école Airdrie Middle School Falcons’ Jr. A boys’ basketball team completed its 11W-0L season with the Rocky View Sports Association’s 3A divisional championship. The team defeated the Springbank Eagles 29-27 in the divisional final, Feb. 11.

Former Airdrie Xtreme players Torrin White and Spenser Jensen won bronze medals in boys’ hockey at the Canada Winter Games in Halifax, N.S.

White had five goals and three assists during the event, including two goals in team Alberta’s 5-3 defeat of Ontario in the bronze medal game, Feb. 18. Jensen had three assists during the event.

In addition, Airdrie’s Mac Lenton and Michael Roy placed sixth in boys’ curling.

Airdrie athletes earned three gold medals, one silver and one bronze at last week’s 2011 Alberta 55-plus Winter Games in St. Albert.

Helga Schlenker won gold in both the women’s slalom alpine skiing event and the women’s dual slalom. Marshall Raymond, Lorna Wendell, Tom Crothers, Karen Crothers and Jeff Tangermann also won gold in mixed 5-pin bowling.

Linda Raymond took home silver in women’s 5-pin bowling, while Norma Wedow and Inger Grieve took home bronze in doubles shuffleboard.

The Midget AA Airdrie Lightning began its playoff run with a 4-3 win over the Red Deer Elks in game one of its best-of-three playoff series in Airdrie, March 1. If necessary, game three will take place at the Ron Ebbesen Arena, March 6 at 3:45 p.m.

The Bantam AA club advanced out of round one and began its second round best-of-three series against Bow Valley, March 3. Game two is March 5 at 1:45 p.m. at the Ron Ebbesen Arena.

The PeeWee AA Lightning also opened its second round series against Red Deer Parkland on March 3. Game three, if necessary, will take place March 6 at 6:30 p.m. at the Ron Ebbesen Arena.

The Airdrie Sting U14 girls’ ringette team earned a silver medal at the Lonnie Krahn tournament in Calgary on Feb. 20. The team, coached by Greg Schamp, Tracy Buchuk and Dave Schultz, includes: Kayla Lawrence, Michelle Orsten, Ashley Schamp, Amy Blair, Laura Jean Knott, Brooke Schultz, Katlyn Buchuk, Rachelle Goudy, Claire Kelly, Courtney Lacoursiere, Michaela Kelly, Shannon Brownell and affiliate player Nicole Foster.

The Sting finished second in the zone and are looking to qualify for provincials later this month.
