Sports Shorts: RVSA boys' soccer season set to begin next week

Barring another major snowstorm, the Rocky View Sports Association’s 2011 boys’ soccer season will begin next week. The defending champion Chestermere Lakers will open the schedule against the Bert Church Chargers, May 3 at East Lake Park.

The defending champion Chestermere Lakers will open the schedule against the Bert Church Chargers, May 3 at East Lake Park. Game time is 4:30 p.m. Concurrently, George McDougall will visit the Cochrane Cobras, while Bow Valley will make the short commute to Springbank.

The two semifinals are set for May 24, followed by the gold medal and bronze medal games at Airdrie’s Monklands Park on May 26.

The WHL Bantam draft will take place at Calgary’s BMO Centre on May 5, with several Airdrie Xtreme AAA players expected to be selected in the first couple of rounds. Tyler Wong, Colby Chartier, Jake Dube and Mackenzie Bauer could all be first-round picks, while Ben Kriwokon, Connor Boyd, Kyle Pauls and Ryan Zeniuk could also hear their name called by one of the WHL’s 22 teams.

Former Xtreme standout Zach Boychuk and his Charlotte Checkers began its second-round AHL playoff series against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on April 28. Boychuk had seven points in Charlotte’s six-game round one win over the defending Calder Cup champion Hershey Bears.

Jay Raymundo has raised $450 for relief efforts for March’s earthquake and Tsunami in Japan during his raffle to “Train the Trainer.”

Seven-year-old Samantha West was one of the winners and will be taking Raymundo to a kids Zumba class, at 11:15 a.m. April 30 at Gold’s Gym. The second winner, Sharon Big Bull, will then take over with a program she has designed with other members.

The Airdrie BMX Association will hold its season registration at the track from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 30, followed by its beginner’s clinic and garage sale on May 14.
