Sports shorts: Cochrane Classic raises $1,100 for charity

But the real winner was the Cochrane Activettes, as more than $1,100 was raised for the non-profit organization.

“I thought it went very well,” said co-organizer Brayden Thorogood. “Everyone seemed to have fun, and we raised a lot of money for the Cochrane Activettes.”

“It was great to play in the game,” said Sam Yetman, a Grade 11 BVHS student. “The crowd got really into the game, which was awesome.”

In meeting number three of Airdrie’s NHL players, Dana Tyrell had an assist as the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Carolina Hurricanes 4-3 in overtime at home on Feb. 12. Tyrell’s assist came on Sean Bergenheim’s second-period goal.

Boychuk logged 6:11 of ice time in 10 shifts for Carolina, which sits in eighth place in the NHL’s Eastern Conference playoff race. Tampa Bay is in second. The two teams will meet again March 25.

Last week’s Rocky View Sports Association basketball scores were: in boys varsity, Bert Church over Bow Valley 99-91, Chestermere over George McDougall 96-76 and Cochrane over Springbank 71-52. In varsity girls’ action George McDougall beat Chestermere 81-48, Bow Valley beat Bert Church 46-41 and Springbank beat Cochrane 72-66.

In boys’ JV, Bert Church beat Bow Valley 71-40, Cochrane beat Springbank 82-48 and Chestermere beat George McDougall 70-41. In girls’ JV, Cochrane beat Springbank 50-31, Bow Valley beat Bert Church 47-29 and Chesteremere beat George McDoygall 53-44.

The Edge Boys’ Mountaineers prep hockey team swept three home exhibition games at the Kyle Stuart Arena last weekend. The team beat the Okanagan Hockey Academy 6-3 and 4-2, Feb. 11 and 12, and beat the Banff Hockey Academy 5-2 on Feb. 13.

The Edge School is also having an open house Feb. 15 from 6-9 p.m., featuring information sessions and tours for parents and dance, soccer, hockey and golf workshops for prospective student-athletes in grades 5-12.
