Sports shorts: Boychuk earns AHL weekly honour

Airdrie’s Zach Boychuk was named the American Hockey League’s player of the week, March 28, as his five goals and five assists led the Charlotte Checkers to three wins.

Boychuk’s five goals included two game-winners tallies for the Checkers, who currently sit third in the AHL’s East Division with 91 points.

He has 22 goals and a team-high 37 assists in 55 games with Charlotte this season, in addition to four goals and three assists in 23 games with the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes.

In recognition of his achievement, Boychuk will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming Checkers home game.

Airdrie’s Ty Rattie had an assist in the Portland Winterhawks’ 7-2 win over the Everett Silvertips in game two of their best-of-seven first round WHL playoff series.

Rattie finished with 28 goals and 51 assists in 67 games for Portland, which went 8W-2L in its final 10 regular season games to secure the Western Conference’s No. 1 playoff seed.

Games three and four were held March 30 and 31 (results were not available at press time).
