Sport Shorts: Tristar to host jumping competition

Riders from across the region and the province will converge just outside of Airdrie next weekend, as the Tristar Equestrian Center is hosting a show jumping competition, May 28-29.

Lauer battled the wind and cold to place first in the Schooling Jumper 2.9 category, win Reserve Champion in the Jumper JR/AM 0.9 m, Champion in the Jumper 0.9 Open and Champion in the 0.9 Miniprix. Lauer was riding her four-year-old Holsteiner Canadian Warm Blood gelding – Earl Grey. This was Earl Grey’s first outdoor tournament and Lauer couldn’t have been happier with his performance.

Competitors ages eight to adult will compete at this two-day event, which will also help support the Airdrie Food Bank. Riders will begin at 9 a.m. both mornings and the public is welcome to attend.

The venue is located west of Airdrie, in a hilltop yellow arena just south of Highway 567 on Range Road 20.

The best under-14 and under-18 tennis players from across Alberta will be in the city this weekend for the Airdrie Open Junior Tennis Tournament.

Hosted by the Airdrie and District Tennis Association, the event will take place at the East Lake Athletic Park from May 20 to 22. The tournament is also being used to help select the Alberta team that will play at the outdoor nationals in August.

Action gets underway at noon on May 20 and concludes on the afternoon of May 22, while the public is welcome at no charge.

Dana Tyrell is still looking to get back in the lineup for the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Eastern Conference finals against the Boston Bruins.

The Airdrie forward hasn’t played since game four against the Pittsburgh Penguins, in round one of the NHL playoffs, but is hoping to see some action before the end of the Boston series.

As of press time, before game three on May 19, the Bruins and Lightning were tied at one game apiece.

Zach Boychuk and the Charlotte Checkers were down 3-0 in their AHL Eastern Conference finals series with the Binghamton Senators, before game four, May 18.

Boychuk has eight points in 15 playoff games this postseason.

Ty Rattie’s season officially came to an end when his Portland Winterhawks lost its fourth straight game to the Kootenay Ice in game five of the WHL Western Conference finals, May 13.

The 18-year-old will now focus his attention on the upcoming NHL entry draft, to be held June 24 in Minnesota. He is projected to go in the first round according to NHL Central Scouting.
