The Airdrie Thunder Junior B club will open its Heritage Junior Hockey League exhibition season when it hosts the Blackfalds Ford Wranglers at the Ron Ebbesen Arena on Sept. 9. Game time is 8 p.m.
The team will play two other exhibition games: in Airdrie against the Red Deer Vipers on Sept. 16 and in Cochrane to face the Generals on Sept. 18.
MP Blake Richards’ third annual Wild Rose Hockey Charity Challenge game will take place at Cochrane’s Spray Lakes Sawmills Family Sports Centre on Aug. 27 at 1:45 p.m.
Doors open at noon with a silent auction and a chance to meet some of the celebrity players, including national Defence Minister Peter Mackay, one of Airdrie’s NHLers, Zach Boychuk, and former Calgary Flame Sheldon Kennedy.
Money raised from the game will go towards regional victims’ assistance groups.
The Airdrie Storm Bantam club will open its Calgary Bantam Football Association season on Aug. 27. The team will play the Calgary Chargers at Shouldice Park’s Hellard Field. Game time is 9 a.m.

The Rocky View Sports Association teams begin their seasons with an exhibition game, Sept. 7.
The Airdrie Xtreme Bantam AAA hockey club will host its annual tie-dye game on Labour Day.
The inter-squad game, which wraps up the team’s tryout camp, will be played at the Ron Ebbesen Arena on Sept. 5, in advance of the opening of the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League season later in September.
The Woodside Golf Course is preparing to host its Men’s Open Championship Sept. 3 and 4. The 36-hole flighted tournament will be limited to the first 124 paid entries. Deadline for the event, which is $95 for members and $175 for non-members, is Aug. 26.
Spots are still open for both Airdrie Minor Hockey and Airdrie FC Indoor Soccer. Deadline for early soccer registration is Aug. 31.
