The Rocky View Sports Association (RVSA) will determine its divisional champions in basketball this weekend.

George McDougall is the No. 1 seed in the girls’ draw and will host either the Bert Church Chargers or the Bow Valley Bobcats in a semifinal at 4 p.m. on March 2 at the Mustang Corral.

The Bobcats and Chargers, seeds No. 4 and No. 5, played in a quarter-final after the City View went to press on Feb. 29. The other quarter-final featured No. 6 Chestermere and No. 3 Cochrane, where the winner will face No. 2 Springbank in a semifinal at 2 p.m. on March 2.

The gold final will be played at George McDougall at 5 p.m. on March 3.

In the boys’ draw, No. 1 seed Chestermere will face either No. 5 Springbank or No. 4 Bert Church (who played in a quarter-final Feb. 29) in a semifinal, scheduled for 8 p.m. on March 2 at George Mac. The other semifinal, featuring the host No. 3 Mustangs and No. 2 Cochrane Cobras, is set for 6 p.m. on March 2.

The boys’ gold final will tip off on March 3 at 7 p.m.

The Midget AA Airdrie Lightning will open its South Central Alberta Hockey League playoffs with a first-round series against Lacombe.

Series times had not been determined before the City View went to press.

The Bantam AA Lightning, as the No. 3 seed, defeated Innisfail in round one and will face Wheatland in the second round. Game one was March 1, after press time, while game two is at the Ron Ebbesen Arena on March 3 at 4:45 p.m.

The Peewee AA Lightning, the No. 3 seed, beat the Red Deer TBS in two straight games during round one and will now face Bow Valley in round two. Game one was in Cochrane on Feb. 29, after the City View went to press. Game two will be at the Ron Ebbesen Arena on March 3 at 2:15 p.m.

Airdrie’s Zach Boychuk was recalled to the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes, from the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers, earlier this week.

He played 14 minutes in his first game with the big club since November in a 4-3 win over Nashville on Feb. 28.

Boychuk has 32 points in 45 games for the Checkers this season, while he has two points in 13 games at the NHL level.

The UFA Bisons, based in Strathmore, but featuring a number of former Airdrie Xtreme players, lost its first-round series in the Alberta Midget Hockey League post-season.

The team lost two straight games to the Calgary Buffaloes, 5-4 in Calgary on Feb. 22, and 2-1 in Strathmore on Feb. 25, in the division quarter-finals.

Former Xtreme players with the Bisons include Wilson Sproule, Lenny Hackman, Tyler Wong, Chandler Irvin and Austin Masse.
