Sport Shorts: Local players to skate at SCAHL all-star weekend in Red Deer

The Bow Valley Timberwolves and the Airdrie Lightning programs will both send multiple players to the three South Central Alberta Hockey League (SCAHL) all-star games in Red Deer this weekend.

The Midget AA, Bantam AA and Peewee AA games will all take place on Jan. 15 at the Red Deer Arena. The Peewees will take the ice at 10 a.m., the Bantams at 12:15 p.m. and the Midget players at 2:45 p.m.

At the Midget level, five area players will represent the SCAHLís North Division. Bow Valley will send forward Reed Boothby and defenceman Craig Packard, while the Lightning will loan forward Craig Fraser, defenceman Lukas Pollock and goaltender James Fisk.

For the Bantams, the Timberwolves have forwards Ben Willms and Adam Tisdale attending, while Airdrie will send forward Keegan Ziemer, defenceman Owen Sigurdson and goalie Jake Carlson.

In the Peewee all-star game, Bow Valley has forwards Zachary Bokenfohr and Dominic Schmiemann and goalies Max Murchison and Ben Laidlaw heading to Red Deer, while the Lightning will be represented by forward Gary Haden and defenceman Jacob Gillespie. As part of the weekend, there will be an all-star banquet at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 15.

The Rocky View Sports Associationís basketball schedule will resume on Jan. 10. On the boysí side, the provincially No. 1-ranked Chestermere Lakers will host the Bert Church Chargers, while the Springbank Phoenix will be in Airdrie to challenge the George McDougall Mustangs. Both games are at 7:45 p.m. The Cochrane Cobras will play its first game of 2012 at the Bert Church Chargersí gym, Jan. 14. Tip off is at 11 a.m.

On the girlsí side, the Phoenix hosts the Mustangs, Jan. 11 at 7:45 p.m., while the Chargers will visit the Lakers Jan. 12 at 6 p.m. and the Bow Valley Bobcats take on the crosstown-rival Cobras at 7:45 p.m.

The Airdrie Thunderís next home game will be on Jan. 13 when the club hosts the Red Deer Vipers. Game time is 8 p.m. at the Ron Ebbesen Arena. The Cochrane Generalsí next home game will be on Jan. 14, when the team plays host to the former division-rival Thunder at the Spray Lakes Sawmills Family Sports Centre.
