Sport Shorts: Local hockey star expected to be first-round pick

The 18-year-old right-winger was ranked No. 25 overall in hockey insider Bob McKenzie’s final draft rankings on June 20, while he was selected 21st overall in Pierre McGuire’s mock draft on June 21. He was also ranked No. 17 in North American skaters in the final standings by NHL Central Scouting.

The Ottawa Senators hold the 21st overall pick and the Toronto Maple Leafs have the 25th selection. The Calgary Flames have the 13th pick.

Rattie, 6’0” and 170 pounds, tallied 79 points (28G-51A) in 67 regular season games as well as 22 points (9G-13A) in 21 playoff games with the WHL Portland Winterhawks.

Rattie was also selected to the 46-man Canadian World Junior Team summer tryout camp.

Several Airdrie athletes, out of the nearly 1,000 competitors, won medals at the Hershey’s provincial track and field meet in Edmonton, June 11 and 12.

Jacob Aulin, Jacob Hudson, Mark Zachary and Ben Neiemish won the boys’ 4 X 100-metre relay, as did the girls’ team of Madison Turley, Maddy McKinley, Sam Rajah and Sara Lielliott.

Aulin also claimed first in the boys’ 100-metre dash and second in the 50-metre. Zachary was second in the boys’ softball throw. Sierra Bacon finished second in the girls’ standing long jump.

Airdrie FC will host a U12 through adult tournament at Monklands Park between June 24 and 26, while the annual Timbit and U10 soccer festival will run the same days at Big Springs and R.J. Hawkey fields.

The first two races of the Alberta provincial BMX series will take place at Airdrie’s track on June 24 and 25th.

Hundreds of riders from across Alberta are expected to compete.
