The Indus Hurricane was one of four division winners at Airdrieís recent Midget Invitational Tournament.
The event, which ran Jan. 20 to Jan. 22 at the Ron Ebbesen Arena and the Plainsman Arena, featured a Tier 2 pool, a Tier 3 pool, a female division and a house pool, with 18 total teams competing.
The Indus Hurricane beat the Andrew Aces in Tier 3 final, the Airdrie Lightning defeated the Olds Black Mambas in the Tier 2 final, Innisfail beat Airdrie in the female final and the Leduc Roughnecks 2A squad claimed the house final.
ìWe were really happy with the way everything turned out,î said Airdrie Hockey general manager Greg Wing. ìWe had some excellent visiting teams and our Airdrie teams really showed our true colours and made us proud. We didnít have any major blowouts or any teams that were out of the running altogether. It was a very competitive tournament all the way around.î
Airdrie Hockey runs a Tyke and Novice tournament every year, with Atom and Peewee and Bantam and Midget alternating every other year. The Midget tournament has been running for nearly 30 years, despite not being an annual event.
ìWe have too many kids and not enough ice to run the tournament every year for every division,î Wing said. ìWeíd like to get back to that, hopefully when the arenas (Genesis Place phase three) are built we could.î
The Rocky View Sports Associationís basketball league will resume play this week, following a two-week break for high school diploma exams.
The No. 1 provincially-ranked Chestermere Lakers will host the Cochrane Cobras in boysí action, Jan. 31. Tip off is set for 7:45 p.m.
Springbank has a bye this week, but will host Cochrane on Feb. 7. Chestermere will visit George McDougall the same night, with games beginning at 7:45 p.m.
On the girlsí side, Springbank will host Bow Valley and Chestermere will play at Cochrane on Feb. 1. Both games tip at 7:45 p.m.
The Midget AAA AC Avalanche will be in action at Cochraneís Totem Arena this weekend. The Avs will host the CNHA Canucks on Feb. 5, with puck drop scheduled for 3:15 p.m.
