The Edge School’s Mountaineer boys’ prep hockey team is preparing to put its perfect 9W-0L season record on the line at home this weekend.

The Mountaineers are set to host the Mid-West Prep Hockey League West weekend on Jan. 28-30, featuring 10 games of boys’ prep hockey from the MPHL’s West division.

The Mountaineers will play Gilmour Academy, from suburban Cleveland, Ohio, at 10 a.m. and Shady Side Academy from Pittsburgh, Pa. at 8:30 p.m., Jan. 28. On Jan. 29, they will play Lake Forest Academy, based near Chicago, Ill., at 6:15 p.m. and the Loyola Academy, from Wilmette, Ill., at 8 a.m. on Jan. 30.

“This roster of five teams promises to show high calibre prep hockey,” said Brent Devost, Edge School founder and president. “This is a great opportunity for these mid-west teams to come to Calgary and showcase their players.”

All games will be held at the Kyle Stuart Memorial Arena at the Edge School near Springbank.

The Edge Mountaineers’ girls’ prep hockey team swept four straight games in its Jan. 7-9 trip to Vancouver. The team beat the Warner Warriors 5-3, the Balmoral Hall Blazers 5-0, the Minnesota Thoroughbreds 1-0 and the host Pacific Steelers 5-2. The Mountaineers lead the Junior Women’s Hockey League with a 16W-3L-3T record, including a 9W-1L-2T record in its division.

The team will travel to Washington, D.C. this week to compete against its nine JWHL rivals, and six other opponents, during the Challenge Cup, Jan. 28-31.

The South Central Alberta Hockey League held its 12th annual All-Star Weekend in Red Deer last week, with a total of 10 Airdrie Lightning players suiting up in the three different games, Jan. 16.

Airdrie’s Clay Murray was named North MVP in the Bantam AA All-Star game, as the Bantam South edged the North 5-4. Forward Josh Hoath and defenceman Dean-Douglas Konshuck also represented Bantam AA Airdrie Lightning. Todd Titley and Logan Smith, both forwards, as well as defenceman Colton Koch, were selected from the Midget AA Airdrie Lightning. Their North All-Star team beat the South squad 5-1.

In the Pee Wee AA All-Star game, where the South beat the North 7-1, Airdrie sent forward Jordan McConnell, defenceman Cory Kohut and goaltenders Kurtis Chapman and Brett Petek.

The All-Star weekend, held in Red Deer for the second consecutive year, also involved a Saturday evening banquet for 400 players, coaches and family members.

The National Lacrosse League’s Calgary Roughnecks have signed a contract with Airdrie’s Genesis Place to have it serve as the team’s official training facility for the remainder of the 2011 season.

The move, which will include all practices and various other team activities, and follows the use of the facility for Roughnecks’ training camp last month, was formally announced on Jan. 20 during the team’s weekly press conference.
