Chestermere United, a group of youth soccer players from Rocky View County, was one of 80 teams at last weekend’s Tournoi International de Dirinon – a prestigious tournament in Western France.

The team found out about its acceptance to the tournament, which was held June 11-12, last December. Since then, the players have been practicing together and raising funds by bottle and food-selling drives.

Chestermere United left for Paris on June 6 and was scheduled to play a series of exhibition games, to help adjust to the time zone, culture and style of game, before the main tournament.

The Calgary Bantam Football Association has conditional approval from the City of Calgary to move forward with plans for the construction of a new home for football at Shouldice Park.

Plans for the football centre include construction of a new locker room for the Calgary Junior Colts, meeting rooms, athletic training room, equipment room, study area, coaches and administration offices, a reception area and a football museum celebrating the tradition of Calgary Amateur Football.

The Cochrane Lions, as well as Rocky View’s Peewee and Bantam Storm and Midget Northern Raider football teams, use the Shouldice facilities.

The proposed football centre would be constructed immediately east of Hellard Field at Shouldice Park. Plans for the football centre were developed in conjunction with an ongoing facilities master plan being developed for Shouldice Park by the Greater Calgary Amateur Football Association and the City of Calgary.

The design and cost estimates of the entire project, construction of a new parking area and other affiliated projects are still being finalized.

“With the tremendous success of our football program, and the response of many of our supporters, I am confident that we are able to take the next step in the process of building our new home at Shouldice Park,” CBFA President Ron Logan said. “We have made significant progress toward our fundraising goal. By putting together a financing plan, we will be able to maintain the overall progress of the project while continuing to raise funds needed for the completion of the football centre.”
