Sport Shorts: Bantam girls' basketball team off to provincials

The Airdrie Minor Basketball Association’s (AMBA) Bantam B girls’ team won the Calgary Minor Basketball league title on March 3 and will now represent the league at provincials in Edmonton this week.

The Airdrie Minor Basketball Association’s (AMBA) Bantam B girls’ team won the Calgary Minor Basketball league title on March 3 and will now represent the league at provincials in Edmonton this week. Action began on March 16, after the Airdrie City View had gone to press. Check next week’s issue for a recap.

The AC Avalanche went undefeated at the annual Sutter Cup in Red Deer last weekend, but one win and two ties weren’t enough to finish in the top three.

The Airdrie-Cochrane Minor Midget AAA team tied the CRAA Gold 3-3 in its opener of the Alberta Minor Midget Hockey League (AMMHL) season-ending tournament on March 8. It then tied the eventual silver-medal winning Red Deer Northstar Chiefs 2-2 on March 9, before defeating the CBHA Rangers 6-1 on March 10.

The Red Deer Iroc Chiefs won the Sutter Cup on March 11.

The South Central Alberta Hockey League’s (SCAHL) post-season has reached the final stage – without any representation from the Airdrie AA Lightning squads.

The Midget AA Lightning dropped two straight games to the Wheatland Chiefs in its best-of-three second-round series: 6-1 in Strathmore on March 7 and 4-1 at the Ron Ebbesen Arena on March 10. The Lightning Bantam AA’s lost to Cranbrook in a decisive game three of its third-round series, while the Lightning’s Peewee AA team lost two consecutive games to the Okotoks Oilers in the North Conference championship series.
