Sport Shorts: Arm wrestler brings home double gold

Airdrie’s Darrell Belyk won two weight classes at an arm wrestling competition in Swift Current, Sask., last weekend.

Twenty-three competitors from arm wrestling clubs Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba were at the event. Belyk won his own weight class of 165 lbs., as well as the 176-lb. class.

The former world champion defeated two of his rivals, brothers Dustin and Kelly Leitch, both from Edmonton, in the finals.

Belyk’s next tournament is April 14 in Sherwood Park. The provincial championships will be in Calgary in May.

The AC Avalanche will play its regular season finale this weekend in Chestermere.

The Midget AAA Minor team will face the Raiders at the Chestermere Regional Community Association’s Red Rink at 3:15 p.m. on Feb. 26. The squad sits fourth in the Alberta Minor Midget Hockey League’s Division B with an 11W-16L-2T record.

The League’s Sutter Cup playoff will begin on Feb. 28.

The South Central Alberta Hockey League’s Midget AA regular season will conclude this weekend.

The Airdrie Lightning, with its 13W-12L-8T record, good for third in the North Division, will host the Lethbridge Hounds at the Ron Ebbesen Arena at 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 25. It will play its final regular season game a day later when the team visits the Innisfail Flyers.

At the Bantam AA level, the Airdrie Lightning will play a best-of-three playoff series with Innisfail. The Peewee AA Lightning will face Red Deer in a similar first-round series. Both series schedules were not available at press time.

After finishing the regular season fifth in the Alberta Midget Hockey League’s (AMHL) Chrysler Division with a 14W-11L-9T record, the UFA Bisons opened a best-of-three playoff series with the Calgary Buffaloes, Feb. 22 at 6:45 p.m. at the South Fish Creek arena.

The Bisons will host game two in Strathmore on Feb. 25. Puck drop is at 5 p.m.

Airdrie’s Ty Rattie hit a pair of milestone markers earlier this week.

The former Xtreme player scored his 50th goal of the WHL season, as well as his 100th point, as his Portland Winterhawks defeated the Prince George Cougars 7-2 on Feb. 20.

Brandon’s Mark Stone has a two-point edge over Rattie in the WHL scoring.
