Airdrie’s Stacey McIntyre had 76,000 reasons to be happy last week.

After the $76,000 50/50 draw from Feb. 20’s Heritage Classic in Calgary went unclaimed for two weeks, McIntyre checked her tickets and found the winning numbers on March 3.

“I didn’t know the pot was still unclaimed until co-workers mentioned it,” she said. “I put all my tickets in my bag and finally pulled them out last night. I logged onto the Flames’ website and discovered I was the winner.”

The winning total is a new record for the Flames Foundation for Life, the charitable arm of the Calgary Flames and recipient of 50/50 proceeds at the club’s home games.

The Airdrie Lightning Peewee AA squad beat Red Deer Parkland in two straight games, 6-5 and 7-4, to advance to the South Central Alberta Hockey League’s North Championship final against the Bow Valley Timberwolves.

The best-of-three series began March 9, while game two is in Airdrie March 12 (4:30 p.m. at the Ron Ebbesen Arena). Game three, if necessary, will take place at 3 p.m. March 13 in Cochrane.

The Midget AA Airdrie Lightning also advanced to round two of the playoffs by beating the Red Deer Elks in two straight games. Airdrie will now face the Wheatland Chiefs in a best-of-three series, which began March 9 in Strathmore. Game two will be in Airdrie on March 11, with puck drop at the Ron Ebbesen Arena set for 7:45 p.m.

The Airdrie Lightning Bantam AA team wasn’t as fortunate, as it dropped to two straight games to the Bow Valley Timberwolves in round two of its SCAHL playoff series.

The AC Avalanche Minor Midget AAA team lost a two-game total-goal elimination series with the NWCAA Stamps, March 5-6, for a chance to represent the Alberta Minor Midget Hockey League as the final seed at the annual Sutter Cup this week in Calgary. The loss ends a tough year for the team, which finished fifth in the Division B standings.

Airdrie Minor Soccer is hosting two season-ending indoor soccer tournaments during the next two weekends. The U10 to adult level house league teams will compete March 11-13, while the Timbits tournament will be held March 18-20. All games will be held at the Genesis Place indoor fields.
