Sport Shorst: Edge Girls go 2W-1L-3T

The Edge Mountaineers Girls’ Prep hockey team had a 2W-1L-3T record during the Junior Women’s Challenge Cup in Washington, D.C., Jan. 28-31.

The team beat the North American Hockey Academy U-19 and the Colorado Selects, tied Belle Tire, Pursuit Of Excellence and the NAHA U-16, and lost to Detroit Little Caesars – the eventual tournament winners.

Although they didn’t come away with the tournament win, head coach Mario Amantea said beating NAHA, which had a 21W-0L-1T record, was a huge accomplishment. The girls’ prep team will now head to Winnipeg for a JWHL regular season weekend, Feb. 11-13.

The Edge Mountaineers Boys’ Prep hockey team won one and lost one against perennial powerhouse Shattuck St. Mary’s in a two-game exhibition series, Feb. 4-5 in Faribault, Minn. Shattuck won the first game 4-2, with Edge enacting revenge a day later with a 3-2 win.

The boys also played the Thunder Bay Kings on Feb. 6, but fell 3-1.

The Chestermere Lady Lakers will host its invitational basketball tournament, Feb. 11-12 at the school. Teams from across the Rocky View Sports Association, as well as a number of visitors, will compete for the championship trophy.

The John G. Timmerman Memorial Swim Meet is set for Airdrie’s Genesis Place this week. Youth swimmers from across the region will converge for the two-day event, Feb. 12-13.
