Soccer series to begin in June

Boys ages seven to nine are invited to a season of soccer hosted by local woman Debbie Di Vetta.

First held last year, Di Vetta found that offering a free season of soccer in the community gives young boys something to do during the summer months.

“I am doing this again this year because we had a great start last season to give something so positive for the families, the boys and the communities,” said Di Vetta in an email. “We had, on average, eight to 12 boys on any given Saturday.”

This year, starting June 27, each Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. games will be held at the Koinonia Christian School field on Yankee Valley Boulevard.

Di Vetta has very limited rules for the games. With no referees on site, the whistle only blows at the beginning and end of every game and when someone scores.

“I also keep the rules light,” said Di Vetta. “If they kick the ball out of bounds, they have to go and get it. The other rule is they have to try and score.”

Di Vetta asks boys to bring two shirts to each game, one white and one coloured to allow any teams to be made.

After a successful first year, Di Vetta hopes to increase the age of the competitors by one each year and make it an annual series.
