Airdrie’s Quicksilver Running will host its fourth annual fun run and ultra run at East Lake Park, Oct. 8.

It marks the first time the local running and triathlon club will host the event in Airdrie, after having the last three in Calgary. The event will feature distances of five, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 kilometres and is free.

“It is an easy course and is a five-kilometre out and back and 10-kilometre loop format,” said the club’s Wendy Contant.

The 40- and 50-kilometre distances will begin at 6:30 a.m. at the Bert Church School field, while the other distances will start at 8:30 a.m. There will be a post-race meal and prize draw at the Nose Creek Park shelter from noon to 2 p.m. There is no entry fee but donations for Give’r for Liver and Genesis Place will be accepted.

The Airdrie Aces Athletics Club ran in its inaugural team cross-country event at Canmore Park on Oct. 1.

Paul Riek, Daniel Ratcliffe and Katie Hillson captured third place in the two-kilometre event, while Courtney Johnson, Jasmine Szucs, and Lilie Szucs captured fifth place in the one-kilometre race.

Grant Erickson ran the eight-kilometre distance in 40:54, while Jodie Matsuba-Szucs and Lisa Wagner ran the five-kilometre women’s event in 27:01 in their first master’s XC event.

“It was a great experience for us all, it really does draw on your core strength to race on that rough terrain, but what fun,” said Matsuba-Szucs, president of the Airdrie Aces Athletics Club. “I’d say it was impressive for our first team cross country event.”

Airdrie’s Ty Rattie is back with the WHL’s Portland Winterhawks.

The 19-year-old was drafted 32nd overall by the St. Louis Blues in June’s NHL entry draft, but was unable to crack the team’s 23-man roster at camp. He has already amassed eight points (six goals, two assists) in four games with Portland.

Rattie will also be in Calgary on Oct. 25 when the Winterhawks visit the Hitmen for the only time this season.

Dana Tyrell and Zach Boychuk will not begin this hockey season at the NHL level, as both have been sent down to their respective AHL clubs. Tyrell, who was a +1 with no points in five preseason games, will begin the year with the Norfolk Admirals after the Tampa Bay Lightning made its 23-man roster official on Oct. 4.

The Carolina Hurricanes sent Boychuk to the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers on Sept. 29.
