Reporter willing to try array of new sports

Hearing about City View reporter Trevor Bacque’s recent flight with the Snowbirds has got me thinking.

Hearing about City View reporter Trevor Bacque’s recent flight with the Snowbirds has got me thinking.

If he could go up in CT-114 Tutor jet with Canada’s premier aerobatic aviation squadron because of his media credentials, what type of sports around Airdrie could I possibly try?

I thought about this during the Airdrie Pro Rodeo a few weeks ago, and the Calgary Stampede last week, even though I don’t know what type of circumstance would ever have me try to ride a bull, try to ride bareback or jump off a horse to wrestler a steer.

I don’t see that happening in this lifetime.

Some of the country’s best tumbling and trampoline athletes will be in the city next week for the Canada Cup gymnastics event, so maybe I’ll drop by and try and pick up a few pointers.

I’m 6’3” and have decent co-ordination, but my lack of flexibility may hold me back. Plus just watching people wrench their bodies in those twists and turns has me questioning how they even do it.

Pass.

The Airdrie Thunder’s annual 3-on-3 hockey tournament is only a few weeks away. Perhaps I’ll dust – literally – off my skates and hit the ice at the Ron Ebbesen Arena on Aug. 13.

Sure, I haven’t played a proper game of ice hockey since Gansgta’s Paradise or Macarena were burning up the music charts in 1996, but I’d like to think my once-a-year street hockey game will have kept my skills sharp.

I also watch enough hockey and cover enough games to see how the game has evolved since the heyday of ABC’s TGIF programming era.

Maybe.

On Aug. 25, some local celebrities and NHL’ers will converge on the links at Woodside for a fundraising golf tournament to help support the ongoing effort to Raise the Rinks for Genesis Place’s Phase III.

Now I’m not much of a golfer (I do my best golfing on the 19th hole, or while pub golfing – seperate story), but the thought of spending a work afternoon at the golf course has me intrigued.

I think we have a winner.
