Rocky View County will have another football team to cheer for in September.

The Rocky View Rage AAA football program is now accepting registration for a “Rep” pee wee team for players ages 10 to 12. The team is currently based out of Cochrane and is looking for players from communities within Rocky View County.

“We wanted to develop a solid and reputable program in Rocky View that would be competitive for provincial championships every year,” said Rage Defensive Coordinator Chris Ney. “We want to develop players in the area and reach out to communities that don’t have a football program. We’re blessed with an abundance of coaches with a number of combined years of playing and coaching experience, which are bar none for player and team development.”

The team will play in the Central Alberta Football League against teams from across Southern Alberta, including Red Deer, Strathmore and Innisfail. The team is holding a summer camp the week of June 1, which will help teach the fundamentals of the game. Evaluation camp will be held the week of June 25.

Full practices start at the beginning of August, with equipment provided by the team. Ney said the helmets the team will be wearing are equipped with the latest technology for preventing concussions.

The season will run throughout September and October, and Ney said the team is also hoping to host a 12 to 16 team pee wee tournament in the fall featuring teams from across the province.

“We want to put this area on the map for football,” he said. “We have so many gifted kids that can play ball. Kids want to be the best they can be and we want to give them an opportunity to achieve and to make it to the next level. The program we’ve developed teaches the basics and gives the kids a good grasp of football. We have a coaching staff of 10 and we’re really excited for this year.”

While the pee wee team is the focus this year, the program will expand next year to include bantam and atom level teams.

Registration for the pee wee team will be held June 7 at the Bearspaw Community Centre from 7 to 9 p.m. and June 16 at the Rocky Ridge Co-op from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. For more information on the program, visit www.rageaaafootball.com
