One of the most impressive runs in Rocky View Sports Association history came to an end, Nov. 6, when the George McDougall Mustangs lost the varsity boys volleyball division championship to the Cochrane Cobras.

After winning five consecutive divisional crowns, the ‘Stangs fell to the Cobras in a rollercoaster five-set game, 22-25, 25-17, 25-17, 22-25, 10-15.

“We knew it would be tough, Cochrane has a lot of strong players,” said Mustangs’ coach Chelsea Somerville.

“We had a few lulls in our play, but overall they played a good game We need to learn to keep the pressure on for the entire match.”

Cochrane coach Doug Jensen was pleased with his team’s steady attack.

“It was a well-rounded game where the ball was spread out between the six players on the floor,” he said.

“We had a very solid first set and then we took a dive and struggled defensively. Once we adjusted to where George McDougall was placing the ball, we were successful.”

On Nov. 19 and 20, the Mustangs will compete in the South Central Zones playoffs at Foothills Composite High School.

“It wouldn’t be unrealistic if we received a top-three finish, but that will only happen if they work on staying focused and keeping their intensity high,” said Somerville.
