It wasn’t how they wanted to start their season, but a strong second half helped the George McDougall Mustangs put some points on the board in a 52-14 loss to the Cochrane Cobras, Sept. 17.

“The first half showed that it was the first game of the season,” said Brent Legault, the Mustangs’ head coach. “The team played very well in the second half, and it showed a better representation of the kind of team we have.”

It was all Cochrane for the first half, as the Cobras built a 45-0 at halftime. Zane Churchill and Kellan Forrest led the offence for the Cobras, as Churchill had two touchdowns and Forrest had three.

Josh Duazo scored the first Mustang touchdown on a 30-yard run and the second on a five-yard carry. Legault also credited Corey Robinson for sparking the late offensive push, after he forced two Cobra fumbles.

“(Robinson’s) two forced fumbles allowed the offence to move the ball down the field and put some points on the board,” said Legault.

Cochrane had no shortage of confidence coming into the game, but Cobras’ head coach Rob McNab said his team is hoping to improve on every game despite outscoring opponents 116-15 in their first two.

“Our goal is to progress every week,” said McNab. “We came in prepared, and I thought we played pretty well, but our kids are willing to get better every week. I thought we did some things better this week. We threw the ball better and we were more consistent.”

George McDougall take on its cross town rival Bert Church Chargers in the annual Airdrie Bowl, Sept. 23. Legault said the last quarter against Cochrane will be a good jumping off point.

“We have to come out and play four quarters of football,” said Legault. “We need to be able to bring the energy and intensity that we had in the fourth quarter against Cochrane into all four quarters and make sure we execute.”

The Airdrie Bowl will take place at the Genesis Place football field at 5 p.m.
