The George McDougall Mustangs and Bow Valley Bobcats soccer clubs fought windy conditions and an inability to put the ball in the net to end their May 10 matchup in a scoreless tie at Monklands Park in Airdrie.

Both clubs shared possession throughout the game, with neither team taking the upper hand during the 90-minute matchup.

George McDougall Coach Brian DeGiuseppe said he is frustrated by his team’s inability to put the ball in the net.

“We played well, we kept possessions a lot of the time and had no defensive breakdowns,” said DeGiuseppe. “We just can’t finish. We can’t put the ball in the back of the net. I don’t know what the problem is, but its been killing us for (the past) three games.”

The Mustangs have put together one win, and a pair of tie games after three matchups this season, with an average of one goal per game.

Bow Valley is sitting fourth-out-of-five teams in the division with one loss and a pair of ties.

Bobcat assistant coach Dan New said he was impressed with his team’s play against what he feels is the best team in the league.

“We had some really good chances. Both teams played really well,” said New. “This was probably our best game defensively. This is the best team we have played so we are happy with how we played.”

Both teams took turns playing into the wind, which can make for difficulty with ball movement according to New.

“We got really unlucky, because it really hurt us in the second half, having to play with the ball on the ground while the other team gets to lift it a bit,” he said.

DeGiuseppe agreed with New, adding the players have to use the wind to their advantage.

“When you have the wind, you try and not kick it and chase so much. We try and use it to our advantage,” said DeGiuseppe.

“That is a big factor. It’s tough to hear each other too. It’s a pain.”
