Chestermere may have jumped out to an early lead, but the Mustangs wrestled back the momentum and stampeded to a 48-15 win Oct. 22 to advance to the divisional Tier II final.

“The team came out ready to play,” said Brent Legault, head coach of the Mustangs. “We got off to a slow start, but we stuck to the gameplan and started to wear them down.”

Chestermere drew first blood early in the game on a 40-yard run on the opening kickoff return that eventually led to their first touchdown. However, an interception by McDougall’s Josh Duazo and a blocked kick by Dallas Morrison sparked the Mustangs first touchdown, scored on a 60-yard run by Duazo.

Cory Robinson and Damon Jonson both added touchdowns before Chestermere scored their second TD on an interception. A successful two-point convert brought the score to 28-15 for George Mac.

That would be the last time Chestermere scored, as the second half was dominated by the Mustangs. Running back Duazo and defensive back Mike Callaway continued their stellar play with Duazo scoring three touchdowns and Callaway scoring George Mac’s third touchdown on a punt return.

McDougall’s final touchdown came on an end zone fumble recovery by Colt Bibby.

“Our O line and D lines definitely made the difference,” said Legault. “(Duazo and Callaway’s) jobs are a lot easier with the guys they have blocking and that allowed Callaway to break up that punt (and score the touchdown).”

Legault said that the momentum shift early in the game helped propel his team past Chestermere.

“Momentum can shift on one play whether it’s good or bad,” said Legault. “We kept pushing and eventually every play became a big play.”

The Mustangs will now play the Springbank Phoenix in the RVSA Tier II final Oct. 29 in Springbank. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.

“Hopefully we’ll have a good game and hopefully we’ll beat them,” said Callaway.
