Host of Rocky View athletes off to WCSG in Kamloops

Nine athletes of various disciplines and one coach from across Rocky View County will be in Kamloops, B.C., for the Western Canada Summer Games this week. The 10th WCSG, which began Aug. 5 and will conclude Aug.

Nine athletes of various disciplines and one coach from across Rocky View County will be in Kamloops, B.C., for the Western Canada Summer Games this week.

The 10th WCSG, which began Aug. 5 and will conclude Aug. 14, is bringing together competitors from Alberta, B.C., Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the three Territories in 19 different sports.

Rocky View athletes include: Jake Nielson of Cochrane on the men’s basketball team; Patrick Murphy of Crossfield and Cochrane’s Nick Scrymgeour on the golf team; Katelyn Dimopoulous of Cochrane on the women’s soccer team; Myria Riffel of Rocky View on the women’s softball team; Rocky View’s Dustin Warrack will compete in freestyle swimming; Chestermere’s Alex Cook on the men’s volleyball team; Cochrane’s Kylie Willis on the women’s volleyball team; Aidan McKeage and Callum McNeice, both of Cochrane, will wrestle, while Cochrane’s Angie Anderson will coach the triathlon team.

Week one sports, which took place Aug. 5-9, included basketball, beach volleyball, canoe/kayak, softball, tennis, triathlon, athletics, baseball and wrestling.

Sports for the second week, running from Aug. 10-14, are badminton, golf, gymnastics, rowing, rugby, volleyball, cycling, field hockey, soccer and swimming.

Team Alberta finished second, with 186 medals, behind B.C. at the 2007 WCSG in Strathcona County.

Outside of the Canada Games, the WCSG is the largest assembly of future Olympic hopefuls in a multi-sport setting in the country.

Edge summer camps

The Edge School for Athletes is hosting a series of summer hockey camps beginning this week.

Designed to create an environment that will facilitate technical and tactical development of players, the first series of camps began Aug. 8 and conclude Aug. 12, while the next set will run Aug. 15-19 and Aug. 22-26.

On-ice sessions, which are offered for tyke, novice, peewee and bantam levels, will focus on power skating, skills, over speed training and conditioning.

Golf for kids on deck

The Boys and Girls Club of Airdrie is preparing to host its inaugural Golf 4 Kids fundraising tournament at the Collicutt Golf Club in Crossfield, Sept. 9.

Registration is $135 and includes 18 holes of golf, cart, lunch, supper and prizes. On-course games include a $10,000 hole-in-one prize and a longest drive competition.

The shotgun start for the four-person teams begins at 1:30 p.m., while the dinner and awards will commence at 7 p.m.

Profit sits 13th

Cochrane’s Grant Profit placed 13th in day one action at the 2011 Bonnyville Chuckwagon Championship on Aug. 4.

His time of 1:17.12 was a full second behind leader Rick Fraser, after the first day of the four-day event that wrapped up Aug. 7.

Profit finished 10th at the Calgary Stampede’s Rangeland Derby last month, earning $32,800 in the process.

Police Rodeo preps

Preparations for the 29th annual Calgary Police Rodeo, set for Aug. 20 at the Airdrie Pro Rodeo Grounds, are coming together.

Contestants from across the region, the country, as well as the United States, will all converge for the only police rodeo in North America.

Events will include bull riding, bareback, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, team roping, ladies barrel racing, breakaway roping, wild cow milking and mutton bustin’.

Rodeo action begins at 1 p.m., while the barn dance, featuring country artist Justin Ament, will start at 9 p.m.

RVSA schedules released

The Cochrane Cobras will look to defend two more titles when the Rocky View Sports Association’s football and varsity girls’ soccer season begin next month.

Full schedules have been released, with the Cobras’ football team set to open its season Sept. 9, when they host crosstown rival Bow Valley.

The Springbank Phoenix will host the Chestermere Cowboys on the same day, marking the opening game for those two teams as well.

Chestermere will also visit Springbank when the girls’ soccer league opens on Sept. 13. On the same day, Cochrane will host George McDougall and Bow Valley will head to Bert Church.

Soccer finals are scheduled for Oct. 6, followed by the South Central Zone Championships. The RVSA football finals are set for Oct. 28.

Irricana bullnanza cancelled

The annual Irricana Humps and Horns bull-riding extravaganza, which was scheduled for Aug. 6, was cancelled for undisclosed reasons. No make-up date has been announced.
